These are some questions to go over after watching a film.  These are to help you recognize some of the subtle ways movies can influence you.  Not all will apply, and a movie does not have to be perfect to be watchable.

1.  Is the main character moral?

2.  Is the side of “good” portrayed as witty, attractive, powerful and intelligent?

3.  Are the main characters part of a traditional family?  If not, are alternative families shown as the ideal?  Or do they express the harsh reality of such alternatives?  Are traditional family roles (such as mothers, fathers and siblings) supported or undermined?

4.  Are any laws (human and natural) violated?  If so are the consequences accurate?  Or are they glamorized to incite imitation?

5.  Is the existence of God acknowledged?  If so, is it with a positive or mocking tone?  Is religion shown with respect?  Are trivial causes such as environmentalism, science, politics and media elevated to replace Faith?

6.  When the credits are rolling, are you inspired to be a better person?  Or a more depraved individual?

7.  Is your heart turned to your familial relations? Or away?

8.  Is the violence extreme?  When deaths occur, is the sanctity of life affirmed?  (Do the characters and audience mourn or disregard death on screen?)  Are victims passive and helpless, or do they resist?

9.  Do the characters work hard to achieve noble goals?  Or is the situation shown as hopeless?
